Album Review

ANNIE LENNOX came to worldwide recognition for being the extraordinary vocalist of British duo EURYTHMICS who disbanded in 1989 to re-unite exactly ten years later. But she was and still is very successful being a solo artist! Her first album to be released called ‘Diva’ (1992) became a worldwide success with music lovers and critics and established a status she’s underpinned with every following release be it ‘Medusa’ (1995), ‘Bare’ (2003); or her latest one being ‘Songs of Mass Destruction’ (2007) and that’s only an excerpt of her work during the past years. ‘The Annie Lennox Collection’ marks her last release on Sony/BMG.

Frankly I wasn’t even aware of how many songs I actually knew from ANNIE LENNOX until I inserted the disc into my player. Not every song on this collection though, for the opener ‘Little Bird’ for instance, an exhilarating pop anthem didn’t come to my attention so far! At least I couldn’t remember hearing it up to this point. The next three ones on the other hand are all tunes everyone must’ve come across in the past years and so did I. Mostly in the radio. ‘Walking on Broken Glass’ with its unmistakable piano and chorus lines and ‘No More I Love You’s’ having these pithy choirs inserted are tracks you won’t soon forget once heard. But my favourite one out of this three is definitely ‘Why’ which is basically a sheer emotional current of string layers and at times piano with gentle drums and acoustic guitars attached carrying Annie’s wonderful vocals along. I’ve developed a soft spot for these more solemn songs of hers as I think this is where her voice comes to full advantage and as chance has it there are plenty of those around on the disc like ‘A Winter Shade of Pale’, ‘Cold’, or ‘Dark Road’.

For all her long-time fans most of the material showcased on here should be well-known but also they can find something that makes it worth buying the CD: The last two songs are brand-new The slow-creeping ‘Pattern of My Life’ and  ‘Shining Light’, a cover of Irish band ASH  stepping it up a little notch again. All the others - like me - might re-discover many of the songs for themselves and find some new songs they’ll come to love as well! Oh, and it must be mentioned there’s a limited edition of this collection out with a Bonus CD and DVD. Might be of interest for one or the other!
