Album Review

By releasing the newest long-player `Entering the Ice Age´, the Swedish duo DUPONT delivers its third full-length album after the recordings `Ukraina´ (2001) and `Intermezzo´ (2005). According to the band members Riccardo (vocals) and Danucci (programming, keys), DUPONT is primarily influenced by artists such as DAF, DEPECHE MODE and JOY DIVISION, a fact that already gets obvious while you are listening to the latest piece of work’s opener `Run for Protection´. The song is a good example for a typical DUPONT track, as the sonorous speech-singing of Riccardo dominates the minimalistic march-like soundscape made of bass and synths. The second track, the lively `New Dawn´, appears very modern and contains several stylistic devices that could have been dedicated to the recent places-to-be of the urban European club scene. The stamping `Behave´ comes up with distorted vocals, much reduced lyrics and an audible pinch of EBM. My personal favourite is the more melodious track `Like we never loved´ which has got a strong Pop-appeal and conjures up images of danceable NEW ORDER anthems.

All in all, the DUPONT sound is consequently minimalistic and displays a kind of cool understatement. Though, the several tracks seem to be thought over and well-arranged, I miss something like a real climax that could have made me listening more attentively. Probably, my opinion may also depend on the extremely characteristic vocals of Riccardo that are dominating the entire production in an intense way. Finally, the last track `Sapphire´ stands out from the crowd due to dramatic choirs and Dark Wave influenced keys. To sum up: `Entering the Ice Age´ is a well-produced long player containing ten polished and pretty reduced Electronica tracks.
