Album Review

To celebrate their 20th Anniversary, German DISBELIEF will release ‘Heal’, which includes four new songs as well as one remake and three cover versions. Furthermore, the band will play a release show for this record at the Nachtleben in Frankfurt. Already the first song, ‘The Eyes of Horror’, shows that DISBELIEF is not about to make any compromises, even after 20 years of existence. The fast yet grooving mixture between death and thrash metal combined with a remarkable chorus serves as a suitable opener. ‘Isolation’ begins in a faster manner but also consists of rather slow and creeping elements. The vocals appear to be pretty rough but (at least for me) well to understand.

‘The Last Force-Attack’ starts with an uncommon guitar melody and some whispered phrases. Soon, speed is gained up and a modern song is presented, including more technical guitars. The beginning of ‘Certainty of Reality’ is endued with an acoustic guitar sound and continues very slowly. ‘Welcome Home’, which is a cover from the original King Diamond song, appears to be very entertaining and well transposed. ‘Red Sharks’, as well a covered song, is more heavy but still the typical trademarks of DISBELIEF, such as the vocals and the guitar work, are transferred. The third and last covered version, ‘Love like Blood’ (by Killing Joke) also possesses some clean vocals, which at first sound rather unusual but really fit to the song and the general feeling which is conveyed.

The last song of this celebration record, ‘Shine’ is available in a remade version. As I do not know the original peace, I cannot compare the two, but the song at hand differs in a way from the previous songs, as it carries some disharmonies in it. Still it is a nice way of recalling previous records. To conclude, ‘Heal’ is an entertaining and pleasantly listenable album, proving that DISBELIEF can combine modern elements to their traditional roots.
