EP Review

CELLULOIDE is a French trio, at first they released a 5-track demo around 2000-01, the next year saw the release of their debut album ‘Naive Heart’ and achieved some acclaim on the synth-pop scene. It was followed by ‘Words Once Said’ and ‘Passions And Excitements’ LPs. Last year they released their newest album ‘Hexagonal’. There is also their tribute album ‘Naphtaline’ with covers of SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES, CURE, LUSH, SISTERS OF MERCY, LIO, CAMOUFLAGE and DEPECHE MODE and of course some singles / mini albums and reconstruction of their previous creations - they love experimenting! Apart from synth-pop, they also revisited a sound of the past, effortlessly mixing retro with the modern synth-pop, also they’ve took on some EBM influences calling their new musical vision as “Bodypop” - this also was a title of their 11 track mini album.

With ‘Hexagonal’ they started singing in French; this single is post-release of three of its truck with the single titled ‘Imprévisible’ (unpredictable) in two alternative/remixed versions. Their songs here give a strong futuristic feel; they feel like you’re surrounded by a white walls, steel decorations or instruments, somewhere super-clean with interesting designs. The first, ‘Eventuel Remix’ of Imprévisible is more danceable of the two remixes here. The vocal comes in as a dreamy addition, feeling as if from somewhere afar. There’s a beautiful sense of nostalgic melancholy to the song, the French I must say suits it more than if it were in English. ‘Autodesctruction’ has something of a retro, ‘80’s sound.  The lyrics sound as using a lot of rhyming, which you can appreciate even without any knowledge of French.

‘Ordinosaure’ is an upbeat track, making full use of interesting sounds, together with some old computer dressed beat. The ‘my.head remix’ of Imprévisible is a softer and more atmospheric version of the song. You can also check out the main song on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E82l_SUatVQ to compare these versions with the original song. Overall, I have enjoyed their experimental attitude, CELLULOIDE’s interesting nature and wonderful music. I think releasing the single after the album is quite a good idea as if you’ve missed it you might want to go and check the album out indeed.
