EP Review
Just to start with, I was a great fan of the French duet FORETASTE. Why "WAS"? Because ‘Beautiful Creatures’ was a great debut album, very mature, very well produced, but most of all, songs were fresh and the album was built on strong songwriting and unique vocal style. Just like the other leading French act, WAITING FOR WORDS, they brought something new to a style almost monopolised by German or Nordic bands, certainly a kind of French sensitivity and romantics, added to a larger scope of influences, France being a more Pop/ Rock oriented country. The 2nd album, ‘Terrorist TV’, despite the naivety - not to say worse - of the concept (releasing this album on September 11th...) was stronger in the sound, more focused on bass and rhythms, and still with good melodies. ‘Love On Demand’, the 3rd effort was.... "My Greatest Deception". Only 3 tracks seduced me (Today, What If & My Greatest Deception) as they were innovative, trying to explore some new sounds, new melodies.... The rest? I'm not here to review the album, but the new EP :)
‘Alone With People Around’ was not my favourite one as you guessed.... but things are getting better on this EP. Let's go directly to the best of it... DEKAD Remix is outstanding! Should this version have appeared on the album, it would have been a great opening track to the album. Although on the same label, DEKAD avoids all clichés you can hear in their productions (used and overused arpegiators, bleeps, same VSTs over and over again) and turns it into a very strong version. ‘My Greatest Deception’ is a very PET SHOP BOYS orchestral style mixed with dark and gloomy verses, with strong bass sounds. XX's voice is charged with emotion. Already a strong track on the album, the remix name is for once very well found... yes, it's ‘Magnified’. TOURDEFORCE's remix of ‘What About Me’ turns a weak album track in a great potential single. It also reminds of PET SHOP BOYS, but this time, the dancy side of the cult British band. Very club oriented, it brings a certain freshness to the track.
In the end, this EP has 3 positive points:
a) 3 top tracks (the other two are not that bad, but not at the same level
b) for once, no CELLULOIDE remix and
c) it gives the band a good hint on direction to follow in the future: outsource your production folks!
DEKAD would certainly be an outstanding producer for the next album. After all, isn't he already the additional live keyboard of the band?
