Album Review

The dream of being famous and a bit rich should become reality for the two brothers Benji and Joel Madden. In 1996 with 16, they founded their band later named after a fairy-tale GOOD CHARLOTTE and after winning a newcomer’s competition and with the support of a local radio station and to demo tapes; they released their first self-titled album via Sony. 12 years later they belong to the most famous bands in the Pop/Punk genre and released four successful albums and in 2008 add a remix collection to their discography.

This one’s the first remix collection in the entire band history, but except all the remixes included, there’s one previously unreleased track, called ‘Anxiety’, that is more up-tempo and very much puts the vocals to the fore and only has little synth gadgetry going on, contrary to the JNR SNCHZ remix of ‘Los Angeles World Wide’ that has entirely electronic starting sequence and corresponding drums. ‘Broken Hearts Parade’ in its Marshall Arts Remix has kind of a Reggae and sunny feeling to it musically, while the lyrics are less than cheery “Just a funeral march for love today.” ‘The Anthem’ with its monotonous and straight beat would be an ornament for every disco play list. Besides that, it features vocals from the Chicago-based rapper HOLLYWOOD HOLT.

‘All Black’ starts with orchestral strings, chorals as well. The electronic beats follows shortly afterwards and Joel’s vocals, but he’s not the only one singing on this mid-paced Remix. KILL HANNAH singer Mat Devine and shares Vocal duties with him and with his androgyny voice adds unique note to the track. “Hold on, if you’re feeling like letting go.” Easier said than done, sometimes, when nothing really seems flow for a long time. Musically, this track has been turned into a poppy electronic anthem with a detailed rhythm section and nicely melancholic synth layers touching your heart and soul. On ‘Where Would We Be Now’, the leading synth melody which is creating a longing, wistful feeling is bit-crushed. Sounds more like an 8-Bit melody from an old C-64 that way. That remix is all about creating moods and emotions and it succeeds in fulfilling that task, at least for me.

I wouldn’t dare saying, this is the greatest remix collection I’ve ever heard yet I think there’s some cool stuff on that disc, worth to be heard and with its diverse approach, it’s sure to appeal to more than one group of listener’s.
