Album Review
In Autumn 2008, Belgian FIREFORCE formed themselves out of the remains of DOUBLE DIAMOND to play traditional Heavy Metal with Power Metal influences. They gained a good reputation by playing a various number of live shows and in the beginning of 2009, their first EP ‘Moonlight Lady’ was released, including four songs. A couple of changes in the line up decelerated the development of a first full length record, but in spring 2011, finally, the debut ‘March On’ was published. The album opens up with the powerful and straight-forward ‘Coastal Battery’, which already pinpoints the band’s capabilities: rocking riffs combined with clear and strong vocals. Apart from lyrics, that cope with battles, ships and war, also promising guitar solos can be found throughout the entire album.
Whilst the first song appears to be rather in a not too fast tempo, the second one, ‘The Only Way’, kicks off with an almost Thrash-like beginning. The bridge continues a bit slower, but the chorus melts speed and falsetto vocals. In general, the song is pretty catchy and definitely remarks one of ‘March On’s highlights. ‘Annihilation’ and ‘Born to Play Metal’ also feature a heavier style, whilst titles such as ‘1302 - Battle for Freedom’ or ‘Fly Arrow Fly’ veer towards typical Power Metal. Yet, FIREFORCE manage pretty well to reconcile their Old School attitude with modern influences. Consequently, the album contains lots of variation and fans of the genre will surely find lots of different aspects and nuances in it. Furthermore, the band possesses lots of potential and capability, which becomes clear not only by their demanding musical abilities but also with regard to songwriting and production.
