EP Review

There’s chunky riffage and major bass beef from the get-go, and Jan Müller sure gives it some grit, and it’s certainly promising – at least to begin with. But then it all begins to go rapidly downhill. The cleanly sung choruses – initiated on the title track and opener – and subsequently on the sub-METALLICA stomp of ‘Step Into the Dark’ are a major drawback. They aren’t only rather cliché, but also effectively reduce the power of the hefty chug-driven verses. Lyrically, it’s all rather hackneyed, with imagery littered with swords and drops of blood and references to the ocean floor abounding. ‘Oh yeah!’ isn’t a great opening line, and on ‘Coulter’ it really doesn’t work, especially when Müller starts growing on about ‘the kingdom come / thy will be done’. It’s a pity, because musically, Last One Dying hit with some force: the post-apocalyptic ‘The Last Outpost’ grinds out a battery of industrial-strength metal.
