Album Review

First came the vinyl (last year) then came the CD (May of this year) of ‘Rust’, first solo album of ex- PAIN OF SALVATION’s and of DIAL’s Kristoffer Gildenlöw. The music is minimal with piano and gentle guitar, subtle, delicate and strong at the same time with main focus on Gildenlöw’s vocals, altogether creating an album that imparts a melancholy feeling of intensity albeit not overpowering. It’s thoughtful and even so, relaxing; intimate and beautiful too. There’s a good balance between piano and guitar-driven tracks with some songs making exception by focusing on one of them a tad more. The most remarkable song is the album-titled ‘Rust’ where against a narrative of regret guitars loom in contrasting dialogue. The inclusion of female vocals throughout the tracks serves it also very well. It’s an album that invites to introspection, mellow, non-cheesily emotive and wonderful and shows Gildenlöw as a skilful composer and musician that he is.
