Album Review

LATENT ANXIETY is a musical project from LA, California, which combines industrial and electronic sounds with alternative rock, trance and synth pop. It has already released four albums starting with the debut work ‘Perception’, appeared in 2006. The main purpose of the project that is to display developments in the modern world is attained not only by means of different styles, even experimental ones, but also with the help of ambiguous lyrics and changeable vocals. That variety of sometimes incompatible musical elements allows the Artist to fully express his views concerning the current state of our society and even to make some predictions for the future.

So, one can easily notice all those aspects on the fourth album ‘Detonation’, which is described by the musician as “a hot delicatessen for tympanum nutritionists and gourmet head bangers satisfying your sonic appetite with a spicy bombardment of sour subsonic drums, salty staccato guitars, sweet colourful synths and bitter ultralow vocals boiled in historic time and black space” and if one cursory listening was enough to assess the CD, I could agree with these words. But the detailed review of the material exposes some drawbacks. First of all, the music is too tedious, despite various tricks with the arrangement of the songs. And even the high quality of the sound doesn’t improve the impression produced by all that monotony. It feels like the tracks originally are synthesized after one and the same model and the addition of drums and guitars are almost blocked by pure electronic sounds.

So in the process of listening there appeared a strong feeling that the compositions were created by an insensible machine and while the image of a robot bombarded my consciousness the track ‘Terminator’ began. It’s hard to find a word more suitable to describe the music. But it’s possible to single out a couple of songs that are well-done and pleasant to listen to. On ‘Conquistadores’ one can hear the noise of waves and metallic sound of a battle and ‘Galley’ has an interesting meaningful lyrics. The other composition attracted my attention was ‘Like a God’, rather good song and the female vocals brings in some lively notes to dilute the mechanical sound. Well, the electronic music of LATENT ANXIETY reflects the direction in which the society develops and such exactness really scares.
