Milan-based formation THE LOVECRAVE became well-known in 2006 after the release of the highly successful debut album entitled ‘The Angel and the Rain’. The band’s style is usually described as gothic metal however one can easily notice the impact of darkwave, hard rock and even some infusion of electro. So it all seems to be a very peculiar mixture and I was really eager to listen to the new work of the musicians called ‘Soul Saliva’. As expected, the material on it is qualitative and rather interesting but on the other hand it still lacks somewhat originality and freshness so at first I was even disappointed. But as the album proceeds the songs are getting more and more intricate and versatile and at the end I realized that I liked the CD. Maybe it’s not too striking but here the powerful music which combines with beautiful, profound vocals of Francesca Chiara produces a strong impression yet not right away.
The album starts with typical for the style ‘The Other You’ that sounds a bit plain at least until the chorus begins. The song itself is quite good and expressive but it feels like something is omitted and the music fades without evoking a keen response. But it was only the beginning and as I already told you need to listen to the whole CD to estimate it. Actually its true potential is revealed with vigorous, energetic ‘Get Outta Here’ and after that piece all the compositions are simply great. The song that comes next is a cover version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and I must say THE LOVECRAVE created a wonderful track which carries both the best features of the original blended with the individuality of the band. ‘Your Fire’ stands out with its acoustic beginning while ‘Leon’s Lullaby’ amazes with its tunefulness and tranquillity. In general the record definitely is worthy to listen to and of course it will please not only fans of the formation but also all lovers of the genre.
