Album Review

MY FAVORITE SCAR is a Dutch band. Jay, Pat and Evan played together in a band called FEELER back in 2005. In 2008, Stephen and Dan joined the band and after that they started to play live as MY FAVORITE SCAR.

MY FAVORITE SCAR has made one really impressive debut album, ever since I got it with the mail it has been stuck in my CD player. This band caught my attention from the very moment I heard ‘Waste’ for the first time. I instantly wanted to hear more and was very happy to have found myself a new favourite band. You might call this melancholic rock and be done with it but it is so much more, for me it reaches and touches on so many different levels. The songs are complex and powerful; you can tell that there is a lot of hard work behind them. I adore the darker atmospheres the songs have, the razor sharp and smart lyrics.

‘Waste’ is the first single from the album; it’s a heavy song with intense vocals and a cool and clean synth melody that is heard between the growling guitars. I like the edge and energy in this song that also has a calmer part towards the end where the vocals change. ‘My Favorite Scar’ instantly touched me deeply, it’s like a song for all of us that have lost loved ones - losing my grandmother two months ago made this song special to me. The chorus line is so very beautiful “You’re the lines in my hands / I want to be where you are / I wonder where you are / I wonder where / I wonder why / You’re my favorite scar”. Jay sings with so much feeling in this strong and so very moving song.

‘Burn Down’ brings heavy and driven guitars that kick off the song, I love hearing them weaving in and out of focus during the song. The intense chorus lifts it all and the words rings very true in my ears “It’s better to burn down than to fade out”. ‘Save Me’ starts with an intro that had me pause and hit repeat a couple of times before I was ready to move on with the rest of the song. I really like the sound of the drums, the edgy guitars in the intro and the way it all change as the song opens up. This song brings rougher and fiercer elements, simple yet smart lyrics works brilliantly with the powerful music.

‘Lie To Me’ - each time I listened to this song I thought that this time I will really listen to it but every time I simply lose myself in the music and enjoy the way the song builds up before it kind of crashes down all around me. At first the song is simple and light in a way before it changes and becomes darker and almost brutal as heavy guitars sweeps in. I enjoy hearing violins and other instruments that adds to the beauty of this moving song.
