Lacuna Coil, Blackwell

The other day something calmer with PETER HEPPNER in Krefeld and with the weekend at the doorstep, LACUNA COIL was on our schedule now. So no more dreaming and instead rocking the house and getting the adrenaline up high! Quite aptly fits what happened that evening but read for yourself.

BLACKWELL started way back in 1998. Following a few local gigs, they got the chance to contribute to the official KISS tribute album and gladly took that chance. In the following time they had a couple of TV performances and other concerts, as well as having gone through a stylistic shift towards a more rocking stance, inherent in their following material. BLACKWELL is Marc Stahlberg (vocals), Francesco Messina (lead guitar), Heiko Schröder (guitar), Gregor Weyers (bass) and Sandro Messina (drums). /

Music & Performance
The first band of the evening was BLACKWELL and discussions prior to the show told I was not the only one not exactly knowing what to expect. Well, we would soon find out when the guys took their place and started with ‘Digest’. BLACKWELL presented a classic style of hard rock with not an overflowing multitude of melodic riffs, but much of kicking, down-tuned and rhythm-focused chords. They had hardly started as the posing already began, not too much but enough. The centre was singer Marc anyway, wandering up and down the stage putting up a coarse vocal style while between the songs it seemed he had relatives in Texas at many points. Such a slack way of speaking! Besides their own songs, they had one cover for the people in stock with REAL LIFE’s ‘Send Me An Angel’.

That one was known by almost everyone I guess. In the course of the show, Marc developed an awesome fun playing with water and on that song poured nearly the rest of the bottle’s content over his head, spilling it to every corner by shaking it. Just the last act of the water games, I must add. Nice opener!

Lacuna Coil

On currently 5 full length records; LACUNA COIL from Milan developed an individual sound between Death Metal, menacing Gothic, modern Nu Metal and just the right pinch of pop music that even makes their music appealing to people outside the scene. Their fifth studio album ‘Shallow Life’, which has been released in spring 2009, is proof again they still haven’t lost their creativity and fun in the music. LACUNA COIL is Cristina Scabbia (female vocals), Andrea Ferro (male vocals), Marco Coti Zelati (bass), Cristiano Migliore (lead guitars), Marco Emanuele Biazzi (lead guitars) and Cristiano Mozzati (drums & percussions). /

Music & Performance
Now they were all coming closer to the stage not to miss the slightest details of the show and being as close to the action on stage as possible. But first the lights got killed and seeking spots were accompanying a fire alarm signal, serving as introduction for the band, now entering, and meeting with a highly excited crowd. Kicking it off with ‘Underdog’ from the ‘Shallow Life’ album, the band instantly created a tension in the room that kept everyone going. The energy of the song crossed over and the combined performance of Cristina’s and Andrea’s ambivalent vocal performance I guess did the rest. Introduced by a piano theme, the next song ‘I’m Not Afraid’ came up with cruelty and beauty united to set off a rock storm and to highlight a brilliant female vocal delivery. Yes, guys the woman is not just up there for the sake of looking good which she inarguably does, and she’s got charisma. For ‘Fragments’, a little audience participation was demanded with chanting and clapping.

‘Honeymoon Suite’ drifted back to the first album, having somewhat of a progressive tinge to it and bringing to the forth a prime example on how to transfer a stream of emotions through different kinds of looks. On ‘Heaven’s A Lie’, the crowd was supposed to sing along the chorus loudly and they were heard even while the song was still running and not just afterwards as happens more often. With the kicking off of ‘To The Edge’ there was collective band head banging to be spotted and even drummer Cristiano was up for some posing here and there. One song that everyone knows, and seemingly a regular in the LACUNA COIL program is ‘Enjoy The Silence’ and expected most of the hands went up to  say they did know the song and the party then was accordingly. ‘Wide Awake’ saw most of the band members leaving the stage, for it was Cristina’s solo hour striking now and it gave you goose bumps. But those were just a few calm minutes to catch a breath, before the energy regained control on stage and predominated until the finale with ‘Fragile’.

First, after the band left the stage the clapping ceased, just to gain momentum seconds later again, and for such enthusiastic people the band of course came back to do a 3-track encore, encompassing ‘Survive’, ‘Spellbound’ and last but not least ‘Our Truth’. The band would not leave afterwards without mentioning they’re currently writing the new album and will definitely be back in Bochum. Guess we’ll be there as well in expectance of another show like that one.
