SKELETONWITCH from the United States were founded in 2003 and have ever since established themselves as one of the most unusual acts in Extreme Metal. They released their debut ‘At One With the Shadow’ in 2004 and convince due to their intense combination of Black, Thrash, Death and at times Speed Metal. With ‘Forever Abomination’, their fourth work is yet bringing their style to another level. The opener ‘This Horrifying Force (The Desire to Kill)’ begins with an acoustic guitar, which veers towards a characteristic, disharmonic main riff - in combination with the multifaceted, yet harsh vocals, the sound and style of the album is characteristic for SKELETONWITCH. ‘Reduced to the Failure of Prayer’ is a very dynamic, technical-demanding yet grooving up-tempo song.
Although the tracks of the album a rather short, they all sound very distinguished and each carry their own trademarks. A highlight concerning speed and brutality is surely ‘Erased and Forgotten’. Yet, there is no weak song on ‘Forever Abomination’ -the wild mixture of Thrash Metal riffs, Death Metal drums and mean, evil growls and screams is occasionally combined with some interesting and unconventional melodies. During the summer, the band was also playing almost every bigger Metal festival, and they definitely convinced with their unusual, modern and powerful style. In general, this promising band definitely served one of 2011’s highlights and even after the tenth run, there are still new elements to be discovered in the various songs.
