Album Review

THE SCRIPT, a band from Ireland, somehow managed to seep some of their music into TV programs such as for example Waterloo Road, MTV’s The Hills and some video games, which makes you realise that the targeted audience would be the young section (and not very discerning young section at that) of music fans. Just as well, they may not know early U2 so much so they’d not realise that the vocal puts on the young Bono singing trimmings. There are singers out there who assimilate influences and there are those that simply don’t make it their own at all, not to mention that the vocal here is unremarkable. Nor do I detect the advertised ‘soulfulness’ in O’Donoghue’s voice, rather pretention of it.

The sound on ‘Science & Faith’, their second album, many times hurts the ears and not in a positive way; sluggish and hum-drum riffs drown everything under what feels like a dirty thawing snow, even ‘Nothing’ and ‘This = Love’ which start more promisingly get spoilt soon enough, the latter song also gets messed up by the bad weak rapping towards the end, it’s cringe worthy. Some songs echo as well the other Irish well-known bands - BOYZONE / WESTLIFE with the mixture of crowd pleasing inauthentic Hip hop thrown in for a good measure again and for the mass appeal sake, their indie pretentions don’t come off for the poor, basic and unexciting musicianship.

There’s no sign of anything original, random throwing of this or that just won’t make up for the lack of it, they simply lack the skills to fuse the styles to create distinguished and noteworthy music. The “poignant” lyrics that are supposed to be their mark are dishing out clichés and simplistic emotionalism. Seasoned music lovers with higher standards than that will be yawning from beginning to end in that aspect also. After listening to them I even appreciate WESTLIFE and BOYZONE which I’ve not really done before, at least they are good boy bands as that kind of genre goes. I wonder how they managed to get into #1 with songs from previous album; I’d call it very good management for bad music. They might not be talented but they’re certainly very lucky, there are bands out there that deserve to have a record deal hell lot more than THE SCRIPT does.
