Why “Love & Craft”?

H.P. Lovecraft is considered one of the pioneers of fantastic horror literature. As the founder of cosmicism, a literary philosophy that states there is no recognizable divine presence in the universe and that humans are particularly insignificant in the scheme of intergalactic existence, Lovecraft tells stories of beings that exist beyond human imagination in the depths of the sea or the vastness of space. These beings often drive the protagonists, who are usually written in first-person confessions, to madness or suicide. Fascinated by all things ancient, forgotten, and lurking in the shadows, Lovecraft describes humanity's helplessness when confronted with such entities and the knowledge that would have been better left undiscovered. Having a deep aversion to creatures from the sea and strangers, Lovecraft focuses on the most powerful and oldest human emotion: fear, particularly the fear of the unknown.

Lovecraft’s traditional horror, dream world, and mythos stories, especially his Cthulhu Mythos tales (which he referred to as the Arkham Cycle), are the basis of his current fame and status as a cult author. These stories feed my fascination for the mysterious and the unknown. In my work, I draw inspiration from the creatures and fears described by Lovecraft, acting as a catalyst to filter out the harmful aspects so that something non-toxic remains. This provides a glimpse into the foreign and the unknown, creating a desire for the exotic and encouraging exploration of the dark corners that others fear. In the end, my work often results in something amusing or endearing.

I enjoy guiding the viewer, whispering encouragingly in their ear: “Come, take a closer look!” so that they may eventually dare to touch or even stroke the subject. However, not everything wants to be touched. Sometimes it bites back. My artwork plays with contrasts and features alienated motifs from culture and media. By offering a small glimpse behind the paper borders of foreign worlds, I aim to combine diverse forms of representation. The insights in my work are as varied as the media used, which come together in the exhibition to form a whole. Drawings, paintings, models, film representations, and audio-visual experiences hopefully encourage visitors to explore the exhibition with curiosity and form their own notions. These notions may not lead to overwhelming madness but perhaps to small and sweet insanities.
