When a band returns to the place where it all began, it can easily sound like a cliché in the music world. For the five members of NOTHING BUT THIEVES, however, returning to Angelic Studios - a converted barn in Banbury, England - was a purely practical decision. It was here, more than a decade ago, that they recorded their debut album. Back then, they were in their early twenties and felt like they had won the lottery. “We thought this would be our first and last record, so we just enjoyed the ride,” recalls guitarist Dominic Craik.Today, four Top 10 albums and a UK number one record later, the band around frontman Conor Mason have become a global Rock powerhouse. The road to that success was built above all on the stages of the world. Live performances and extensive touring remain the foundation of the band’s career. Anyone who has witnessed thousands of fans singing along to every word in sold-out venues such as London’s Wembley Arena or Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome understands the sheer force of this collective. On tour, the band evolved into a tightly bonded unit that knows exactly how to harness the raw energy of a live show.
It was this maturity they wanted to bring back into the studio. Following the futuristic and tightly conceptualised 2023 album ‘Dead Club City’, the musicians longed for the opposite. “We wanted to write something that felt a bit rawer, more organic and chaotic,” explains guitarist Joe Langridge-Brown. Their new single ‘Evolution’ captures precisely that spirit. The track is driven by the same dynamic intensity that defines their concerts: a stripped-back, propulsive guitar riff opens the song before Mason’s unmistakable vocals enter and the track erupts into a massive wall of sound. Lyrically, Mason reflects on the band’s beginnings in their hometown of Southend-on-Sea and the local live venue Chinnerys.
Despite the commercial pressure that comes with billions of streams and platinum certifications, NOTHING BUT THIEVES have held firmly onto their independence. “We’ve always approached making music like children,” says Conor Mason. “It’s only about how it feels to us. You can’t write songs just to sell shit.” In the end, it is all about the genuine moments on stage and the connection with the audience.
Fans will soon have the chance to experience that energy live once again. Following festival appearances this summer, a performance at the renowned BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and shows alongside BIFFY CLYRO, the quintet will finally return to Germany in January 2027. The British band will stop in Cologne, Munich, Ludwigsburg, Berlin and Hamburg for a total of five dates.
The tour is presented nationwide by DIFFUS and SLAM. The Cologne and Ludwigsburg shows are additionally presented by Radio BOB!, the Munich show by Rock Antenne, the Berlin show by STAR FM and the Hamburg show by Rock Antenne Hamburg.
