Youth club Eastend, Berlin, Germany
11th October 2008
Fan club concert 2008 - Dreadful Shadows supported by Eminence Of Darkness

The evening of the 11th October was quite cold, but the DREADFUL SHADOWS fans in front of the Eastend-doors were waiting for opening with a smile. Of course! It was a rare chance to see the old formation. I arrived ca. 6:45pm after a long journey through Berlin. The youth club Eastend was not centred and distances in Berlin could be veeeery long. I had a fear that it could be too far away for some fans and the club wouldn’t be filled up with 400 people. But I erred. Many of them came from all over Germany, and not only from Germany but also from all over Europe. There was also someone coming from the USA even. Some of them were also guest at the POPCOMM concert of SOLAR FAKE (Advanced Electronic Festival) and joined Sven Friedrich twice in a few days.

First entry was for Shadowplay-Fanclub members at 7.00PM and 8.30PM the official entrance. At this first hour the people had the possibility to get an autograph and maybe some nice words from DREADFUL SHADOWS at the atrium. At the main hall we could hear the sound check of EMINENCE OF DARKNESS and the people were strained to get into the hall soon. As they finished, the doors opened and nearly everyone tried to get the best place in front of the stage. And some other persons enjoyed the big canvas with old band-pictures (sometimes really funny)... from a time before they disbanded in 2000.

Eminence of Darkness

The Electro-Wave-Rock combo EMINENCE OF DARKNESS consists of Mario Bergmann, Lars Schulz and Juliane Richter. They worked on their new album at the Fastlane Studio Dresden in July 2008 and presented together with Rico Schwibs (LETZTE INSTANZ) and Robert "Rosi" Grund 14 new songs. Part of the material is (at the first time) a completely German song: ‘Wenn Du Gehst’. Like every artist, they converted their feelings and emotions into their songs. They supported bands like Blutengel, Zeraphine, Staubkind, Untoten, The Cruxshadows... and today DREADFUL SHADOWS.

Music & Performance
EMINENCE OF DARKNESS performed with a keyboard, a guitar, a bass and three voices - a classical division of labour. And they all wore black. Oops! Juliane and Lars were standing on the left- and right-hand-side of the stage and Mario in the background. But in the middle and front of the stage were a microphone, too. In a few moments I’ve had the feeling, that someone was missing and entered the stage maybe later?! But nothing happened. Why has a microphone the best place on stage? The three souls of the band seemed to be in a kind of a meta-flat because they were standing still, only little moves not far from their microphones. I missed the interaction with the audience. I had the feeling that they were very shy and not interested. There was no energy.

The people liked some songs, but I wasn’t sure. I thought in some moments “Oh, a beat of Rammstein...”! I hadn’t the feeling, that it is really their own style. I’m a fan of nice, interesting drums but I missed them at their sound. Some parts of Mario’s canto weren’t clear. Juliane did a great job. She has a tender rattle into her voice. The atmosphere at the end of their gig was anyhow steamed up.

Dreadful Shadows

They were written off, they had their final concert as DREADFUL SHADOWS in the year 2000, they were the popular make of Goth-Rock and they told us, they will never come back. But they are!!! Thank you! Vocals: Sven Friedrich (of course!), Guitar: Norman Selbiger and Andre Feller, Bass: Jens Riediger and Drums: Ron Thiele. Nobody knows if they will make new songs, but since 2007 they make us happy with live shows. The Shadowplay Fanclub (for Solarfake, Zeraphine, DS) arranged that great concert that was sold out since august.

Music & Performance
10:00pm: Good things come to those who wait! The first beats of ‘Over the Worst’ clinked out of the speakers and everyone was really looking forward to see Sven and the other members of DREADFUL SHADOWS. There were girly-screams, ebullient clapping, scramble, standing ovations (without sitting after it), a million camera-flashes and maybe some blackouts actually. They played not only a few songs across their whole repertoire, they had some really special moments with ‘Vagrants In Space’ and their own interpretation of songs from Marilyn Manson, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Jonny Cash or Linkin Park. The daughter of drummer Ron supports with her violin and Juliane from EMINENCE supported, too. It was a long, long, long, long concert, maybe the longest I ever heard! Of course the boys needed to make a break. It was funny, because everybody thought it is over.

The people get in front of the Eastend-door, smoked a cigarette, and talked about the evening... But it was only the break. The people came back and Sven told them, that they had much more songs to play! So all together more than 30 songs and nearly 3 hours show! Really great! And they not seemed to be broken-down when they left the stage. Far from it - sad to leave. DJ Uwe Marx (Sonic Seducer) achieves the memories of that fantastic evening and this fantastic band for a few hours after concert alive... with nice music! The fans could talk to the SHADOWS (how they called affectionately) and keep the promise that they will relieve such an unforgettable night again.
