Californian formation CHRIST VS. WARHOL that plays energetic post punk with an evident slant into gothic rock this year releases the debut album entitled ‘Dissent’. The CD total length of which is about 45 minutes turned out to be very cheerful and vigorous, so you won’t be bored with its 13 tracks and maybe you will want to listen to them one more time. The material contains all distinctive features of qualitative post punk: light sound which seems to be simplified on purpose, mild irony in the lyrics and a little bit cracked female vocals with rich intonation which usually serves as a screen for a lame range or a flat timbre but not in this case.
The vocalist here makes a major contribution into the whole expressiveness of the songs. ‘At Exactly the Right Time’ stands out as it was sung without instrumental accompaniment that is a very rare phenomenon on the modern rock scene. In the song ‘End is Night’, the male voice also appears in order to diversify the sound of the composition and of course the result pleases a lot. Actually when I started listening to the CD I thought it would remind me of NINA HAGEN or BLONDIE playing almost in the same style but surprisingly this comparison didn’t come to my mind. The material of the album can be mostly associated with the first wave of gothic rock yet that music wasn’t so positive.
Maybe, the interest to gothic rock and then even further to post punk arose because of the stunning popularity of gothic metal. So it was essential to come back to the roots that could enrich the music and make it a bit quaint. Anyway digging out such a music dinosaur as post punk is indeed taken as a fresh and original move which is not commercial at all. Thus, CHRIST VS. WARHOL will be mainly appreciated by devoted fans of the genres mentioned before however the album may also suit the tastes of all lovers of good music.
