Any label who bills all their artist’s music as “Eerie Emotional”, must be aware that the first reaction people (and by people I mean critics) will have is “Oh right, angst in D-minor again then?” It is a good job that ANTIMATTER’s reputation precedes them then, and that this new two disc collection of ambient/acoustic tracks as well as demos, live renditions and remixes is a fantastic example of the stripped back progressive genius of the band.
Going beyond the traditional “Best of” format, ANTIMATTER follow the lead of friends ANATHEMA by collecting their most resonant tracks. This includes stunning renditions of DEAD CAN DANCE’s ‘Black Sun’, ANATHEMA’s ‘Far Away’, and their own ‘Epitaph’. Although ANTIMATTER is now the sole vehicle of Mick Moss since Duncan Patterson left in 2005 to concentrate on ION, Patterson’s contributions still stand alongside Moss’ to give a true sense of career perspective.
The new, remixed and acoustic versions of songs such as ‘Epitaph’, ‘Flowers’, ‘Expire’, ‘Landlocked’, and ‘God Is Coming’ give the collection a familiar yet original feeling, as though it were a newly crafted album. Even the four-track and reel-to-reel demos have been cleaned up and mastered perfectly so as to fit in with the newer contributions perfectly.
ANTIMATTER have made an important contribution to the development of ambient and progressive music in the 21st century, and this collection would be a brilliant starting point for anyone new to the band.
