Album Review
The Norwegian LIQUID GREY has just released their debut album, ‘Grey Matter’. In their promo I read something very interesting; their music is described as “Goth Rock for Highways”. For starters let’s say they feel very comfy in the old school of Goth. Which ones though? Apart from the obvious influences such as BAUHAUS, the band has instilled in its sound something from the FLOWERS OF ROMANCE. It came to me as a surprise but the rational explanation of this choice is that the front man of LIQUID GREY was a member of the aforementioned band. In case you’re not familiar with the FoR, they were quite a legendary Greek Goth rock band.
And the song that seems to have influenced them the most is FoR’s ‘Love Means Death’. The themes the band deals with are murder, betrayal and hate, not necessarily in that order. The opening ‘Everything That Kills’ can indeed be seen as a soundtrack of a road movie, in its heavy Goth rock atmosphere and overall it is an exceptional song. The problem is that after this song, and despite the fact the band never loses something from its coolness throughout ‘Grey Matter’, the listener has a déjà vu feeling. Having said that, even if you’re not particularly nostalgic you’ll enjoy songs such as ‘In Black’ or ‘Part Of Everything’. Though, at the end of the CD you might wish the band delved into a more modern aspect of music.
