Michael Draw, the leader of OTTO DIX, has this quality to become an almost mythical figure in the area of Darkwave. Partly due to his countertenor voice (or soprano if you prefer...) and his theatrical and eccentric attitude or even a baroque aspect of his music and his “partners in crime” the gifted Marie Slip and Petr Voronov it is certain that the music they create is fascinating and unique. My vast knowledge of Russian (that consist only in knowing the word “spasiba”) proved not adequate enough to have any clue at all what the songs were about! Despite that, the feeling I get is that the band delves with some dark aspects of human experience dressed with futuristic neo-baroque music. Their references are not only drawn among the obvious one from the painter Otto Dix, they also include aspects of Surrealism, Romanticism, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the Middle Ages and neo-paganism. And though some of you may not understand the Russian language, it is certain that you’ll understand the reason why OTTO DIX has emerged as one of the major bands in the post-USSR gothic scene. It is also certain that OTTO DIX is a band you shouldn’t miss.
