Album Review

Founded in 2007 in San Francisco, the Theo Mindell fronted retro rock band ORCHID quickly established them as the new hope of 70s inspired doom rock. They released their first EP named ‘Through the Devil’s Doorway’ in 2009 and began work on their debut shortly after. Mindell, a well-known tattooist, obviously manages to sing in a band which fame is steady building and still has time to be a kickass tattooist. In 2011, the band delivered their debut album ‘Capricorn’ which set off an avalanche career-wise; Götz Kühnemund of German metal print magazine “Rock Hard” even called them “the next big thing”. After two EPs in 2012 and 2013 they released the follow-up, ‘The Mouths of Madness’, in 2013, again to great critical acclaim.

Now (still) in the year 2013 they published, or should I say re-published the record ‘The Zodiac Sessions’, which is their first EP ‘Through the Devil’s Doorway’ and the album ‘Capricorn’, completely revised and in a new design. After listening intensely to the whole record I for one have to say that it`s not my cup of tea, I love BLACK SABBATH and that`s something I surely have in common with these guys but this retro rock outfit just isn`t BLACK SABBATH. Sure the sound rocks and you just know Theo Mindell feels the lyrics and all but none of the songs and sounds really get to me. It`s a fun ride to listen to them for a song or two but it`s exhausting and unnerving to listen to the whole record at a stretch. Maybe I’m just to sober to worship these guys but to me it`s neither fish or flesh. So, sorry but I won`t buy your merch and I most likely won`t visit a gig of your band.
