Album Review

THE NULLL COLLECTIVE isn’t a band, nor is it a label. It’s a co-operative of sorts, or maybe a commune. Whatever it is, it is making some interesting noises in the world of Doom and the traditional way in which labels operate. The label side to this entity has about 30 releases under its belt with Death Overtakes Me being a notable name in the list. The other side to the entity is the collective of seasoned musicians E. M. Hearst (Wraith of the Ropes / Torture Wheel), SPW (Uncertainty Principle / Dynamical System Collective), and SVC (Until Death Overtakes Me / The Ethereal et al). The result is collaboration for a series of download only single releases.

The first release in the Nulll Infra series came before Christmas in the form of a crushing Funeral Doom version of the classic carol ‘Silent Night’ (if they weren’t going to hell before that then they certainly are now!). As 2010 rolls into its second freezing month the collective have released the next instalment in the form of ‘Exocation’. The track is an eleven minute long behemoth of Ambient Droning Doom that requires a dark room, headphones, and the bass turned right up for maximum sanity shattering effect. This isn’t music for the masses. This is for us elitists who want their doom as uncompromising as possible. I can’t wait for the next instalment and hope that the end results down the line are collected into a physical release of some kind.
