Album Review
ROYAL REPUBLIC from Sweden are here trying to ‘Save The Nation’, well, not literary of course. It’s their second album following on ‘We Are The Royal’ of 2010. After giving them few spins I breathed a sigh of relief. They’ve not castrated or murdered the Punk in their sound, used a plethora of the generic clichés like most bands of this genres. Their lyrics have a bite of humour and irony, and the cheekiness comes off better than affecting the rage without having any. They are melodically driven many times as well, which makes for a good catchiness. The second song ‘You Ain't Nobody (Til Somebody Hates You)’ has also a touch of New Wave and is one of the highlights of the album.
‘Everybody Wants To Be An Astronaut’ comes weirdly topical considering recent death of Neil Armstrong, who inspired a whole generation to want to be an astronaut, of course for most that meant escapism and a need to prove themselves, which is on the dissecting table here so to speak. However, some songs feel like fillers, and the album would have been served better if kept shorter. It’s a small niggle though; ROYAL REPUBLIC’s album is a breath of fresh air in one of the stalest scenes in the music spectrum.
