THE VACCINES have become something of a phenomena in the UK since their formation in 2010. Their debut ‘What Do You Expect From The Vaccines?’ was a refreshing shot-in-the-arm for guitar-based indie rock, and single ‘Post Break-Up Sex’ seemed to be everywhere for what felt like an eternity. Their second album, 2012’s ‘Come Of Age’ shot to number one, cementing their popularity both commercially and critically.
The ‘Melody Calling EP’ is the latest release, while the band continues writing material for their third album, slated for 2014. And it does exactly what you’d expect. The title track is a gorgeous shimmy of glistening guitar and the brisk, breezy melody hooks you in immediately and makes this an instantly memorable classic pop song. And at just under three minutes, it’s barely had time to say hello, get firmly rooted in your head, and then politely bow-out again… which is surely the very definition of a successful single.
Second song ‘Do You Want A Man?’ is a jaunty affair, all bouncing bass, light stabs of quirky guitar and an irresistible vocal. It’s perfect for a lazy lounge outside a pub while summer starts to fade, a wasp buzzing happily around the cider. ‘Everybody’s Gonna Let You Down’ seems somewhat disappointing and lightweight in comparison, although it’s actually a fine enough song, and sonically sits comfortably enough on the EP. But as a stop-gap between albums, ‘Melody Calling’ is a perfect creation. It’ll keep fans of the band drooling in anticipation of the next full-length release, and no doubt win over a horde of new fans, eager to revel in the fading rays of an English Summer.
