Lichtenvoorde, The Netherlands
20th to 22nd July 2012
Zwarte Cross Festival Day 1: Exodus, The Hives, Pain, Within Temptation
Over the years, the Zwarte Cross or “Black MotoCross” festival grew out to be the biggest festival in The Netherlands and the biggest motor cross festival in the World with over 152,500 visitors in 2011. The festival is a mixture of motocross sports, music, camping and bizarre stunts. This year’s 16th edition of the festival was held from 20th to 22nd July. Having little time and being the only RoD reporter, I had to do some serious cherry picking in the program with over 100 national and international acts performing on 20 stages. Artists range from rock, pop, blues, hard rock, “tear-jerkers”, even Schlager, folk music and Rock ’n Roll. In addition, there are several DJ's and theatrical acts. With the presence of a metal stage though, a choice was easily made. And before I forget; muchas gracias to the great guys who provided me with a superb bicycle taxi ride to the main entrance on Friday, saving me a 25 min walk!

The second day of Zita Rock Festival 2012 started with a lot of rain and there was no sun in sight – but after some coffee and a piece of pie, the rain slowly disappeared and STAUBKIND opened the second festival day while the last raindrops came down. The day promised some fun with more bands to come. So, let’s start the second day of Zita Rock Festival 2012!

6th and 7th July 2012
Castle Rock Day 2: Hämatom, In Legend, Adversus, A Life Divided, Xandria, Gothminister, ASP’s von Zaubererbrüdern
The second festival day had a quite mixed program to offer, which was overall more guitar oriented… just fitting very well to the festival’s name. NDH/ Thrashers of HÄMATOM opened the second festival day in the brightest sunshine at 13:00 PM.

Castle Broich, Mülheim, Germany
6th and 7th July 2012
Castle Rock Day 1: Schwarzer Engel, The Beauty of Gemina, Tanzwut, Mono Inc.
Castle Rock - the music festival from fans for fans in Mülheim’s Castle Broich - gained a constantly rising popularity and reputation as familial, but always top-billed festival within the thirteen years it is taking place now. As it was sold-out once again in 2012 and had an excellent line-up, as usual, this was reason enough for me to take the 350km travel to Mülheim and have a closer look on the festival personally.

Amphitheater, Gelsenkirchen, Germany
23rd and 24th June 2012
Blackfield Festival Day 1: X-Divide, The Exploding Boy, Pakt, Herzfeind, She Wants Revenge, In Legend, Grendel, Weto, End of Green, Roterfeld, Dreadful Shadows, The Eden House, Hocico, Deathstars, Oomph!, VNV Nation
The Blackfield Festival in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, celebrated its 5th anniversary this summer. And for this anniversary, the promoters could celebrate a sold-out festival for the first time in the festival history! The Amphitheatre Gelsenkirchen, embedded in a municipal park and located next to the Rhine-Herne canal, is surely one of the most beautiful locations in the West of Germany. But there are more reasons why the five-year history of the Blackfield Festival is a success story. The promoters of the festival have managed to book bands of all shades and sub-genres which you might outline as Goth. From EBM and Industrial to classic Gothic Rock to Synth Pop to the permanently popular bands of the Medieval Rock & Metal scene range the bands who perform at this festival. And while the Blackfield promoters tend to book the more 'mainstream' bands of the Goth scene they still rarely forget to look at the wider picture by including one of the odder act or a band which you would rather associate with Indie than with Goth.
