The German band ACCESSORY was founded in 1994 by Dirk Steyer and Kay Resch, first under the name VOICES OF DARKNESS, then in 1996 they changed it into ACCESSORY. Jukka Sandeck completed the band. Their demo album was released in 1997. In 1999, Ivo Lottig joined the band as keyboarder. Shortly afterwards Kay left the band. After joining the label Out of Line in 2001 they launched their first official album ‘Jukka 2147.de’. After the release of their second album ‘Titan’ in 2003, Jukka left the band, too. With this album they have released eight albums, four singles/ EPs and appeared on two compilations. They toured amongst others with HOCICO, AND ONE and TERMINAL CHOICE.
Even after listening to this double album a couple of times I’m still ambivalent. There are some quite nice dance tracks on it but also a lot of songs that leave a feeling that the band has mixed a lot of styles together in order to make it work as a dance track made for the mainstream radio stations or clubs. Amongst others they used Dubstep elements. Don’t get me wrong – I really like Dubstep and some bands/ musicians integrated successfully elements of it in their music. But here it is used in an unloving way as if they put sequences of it in some songs because it is fashionable. Songs like ‘Outrun the gun’ will stick in your head (for a while) after listening to this album several times as you will hear it 4 times with the remixed versions. Even so most songs are so much mainstream orientated that more rough songs like ‘Hates gonna fuck you’ doesn’t change this impression.
20 year’s band history and the resurrection indicate a step from the independent domain to the more mainstream edge of music? Hopefully not. The album is available as a standard version containing a bonus album with some further new songs and remixes.
