DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER, Runkel

DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER is a band I’ve heard a lot of things of and I wasn’t really sure how they would perform on stage. I did see them at this year’s Wacken but they really weren’t the band I was expecting to see at that time. But this night changed all my expectations and I was really happy, I did go to the concert but my neck sure was not!

RUNKEL

The band RUNKEL was founded in 1997 in Magdeburg and ever since then, they play music that is inspired by the medieval time. In their songs they tell about knights, death and the devil. Their sound could be compared to SUBWAY TO SALLY but with the difference of two women singing.

Music
With a mixture of beautiful female voices and those ruff guitars, the sound was just ideal for the night. As I read on the homepage of DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER for every different city another band was scheduled, so I figured it would be a regional band and I was right. I hadn’t heard of the band before which was pity because I really liked their music. They had some nice passages of hard drums together with heavy guitars and high key voices. It was just beautiful.

Performance
By coming on stage, you could see that the band was full of energy and was looking forward to their performance that night in the Factory in Magdeburg. As the first song started, the two girls singing started moving immediately - this had the result that everybody else in the hall started moving with them. Looking at the drummer and the guitarist and bassist, you could see that they were really focused on their instruments. Just the moving and jumping singers were a difference to that.

DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER

DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER is a Weimar, Germany based heavy metal band signed to the Nuclear Blast label. Their name translates to “Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. Their original style (featured on their releases up to and including ‘Allegro Barbaro’) consists of death/thrash metal blended with melodic compositions establishing a more epic mood than usual in traditional death metal. In later albums, the death metal influence has declined, resulting in less chaotic composition (often centred around a verse and chorus with a bridge and solo), more constant tempo, longer songs and clean vocals (although not exclusively), resulting in a more polished and accessible sound. They use lyrics in both English and German with a shift from mainly English songs to more German ones on recent albums. http://www.reitermania.de/

Music
This night was full of unexpected things if you ask me. Their sound was just completely different from that that I heard at this year’s Wacken. It was much fuller and much harder which I absolutely liked. His voice was phenomenal which I didn’t expect to be any different. The whole time during the concert, you could recognize that everybody on stage really knew what they were doing there and they always knew how to play their instruments which they proved by guitar and drum solos. The whole crowd was singing their songs along and were just freaking out. All of that was crowned by their last song. It was a cover of the song ‘Moskau’. The audience just danced and jumped around like they were little kids on their own heavy metal playground.

Performance
What can I say? I haven’t seen that much going on since my concert of JBO the beginning of this year. Let’s start with Mark “Dr. Pest” Szakul who was playing the keyboard. He was standing in a cage and wore sort of a sadomasochism mask on his head. It looked pretty funny. Some time during the show, they had 3 girls coming up who ended up being with him in that cage. It seemed to be pretty awkward, but looking into the faces, you could see that they had a lot of fun being in there with him. Later on, they had a couple of people coming up who are supporting “Reitermania”, their fan-site.

They played the song ‘Reitermania’ and had them crowd surfing in huge life rafts. Sooner or later, they all fell down. I guess that kinda hurt. And at the end of the show, they threw huge balloons on the fans and they didn’t wanna have them back. So, everybody was just playing around with them, kicking and boxing them as hard as they could. This was definitely a concert I won’t forget that fast because it was first one in a long time, I really sweated like hell. And I gotta say my neck didn’t stop hurting for a week!
