Short time after the release of full-length album ‘Long-Distance Side Trip’ electronic outfit from Germany MIND.AREA produced the new EP entitled ‘Stagnation // Death’ which is intended to give a new dimension to the project’s music. This time the title of the work seems to be an ideal reflection of the sound and the meaning of the material presented on the album: it immediately brings associations with somewhat stagnation, almost death. Atmospheric trance rhythms are skilfully blended with dark electro and ambient and lavishly diluted with the elements of industrial. Such music conveys the mood of a big city in the best possible way.
At a stretch I can say that MIND.AREA succeeded with the EP: the compositions are definitely of high quality and we can notice a very thorough approach to the process of recording. The small quantity of the tracks on one hand may disappoint the devoted fans of the style but on the other hand it will please those are not quite familiar with it. In general the vocals as such are not distinguished too much and sometimes the voice is even mechanically transformed beyond recognition. It doesn’t dominate over the sound and is often drowned by the synthetic arrangements. The lack of tunefulness maybe, demonstrates some kind of the concept behind the songs but unfortunately it doesn’t make the EP more accessible.
Only several sonic effects create a shade of a melody but in whole the neat mixture of monotonous sounds strongly reminds of the works by AH CAMA-SOTZ. It’s hard to say what kind of audience will assess this release: it’s too overloaded with noise for Synthpop, too complicated for trance and too simple for techno. But who knows, probably fans of rave or industrial will find ‘Stagnation // Death’ a rather interesting music piece.
