Manchester: Again and again, it is this pulsating industrial city in the north-west of England that creates new trends, scenes and currents. The days of the ‘Factory’ in the 80s are legendary, when Pop and Club music were married in the club of the same name to create a new sound that still influences the evolution of Pop culture today. Think of JOY DIVISION, THE SMITHS or the STONE ROSES, all bands whose status is now legendary. The city was also in the lead in the 90s: with the brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher and their band OASIS, Manchester witnessed the birth of Britpop.

Manchester is now returning to the map of style and trend-setting metropolises. With the duo HURTS, a formation was founded in the summer of 2009 that combines artificial sound and visual individuality into an extraordinarily stylish overall concept. Less than six weeks after its founding, ‘The Guardian’ wrote its first article about the band: “The best of the 80s, transported into the modern age, rounded off by an optical aesthetic that is unparalleled in terms of artistic stringency.” The first single ‘Wonderful Life’, released in February, with its monochrome art video clip, is already considered the Pop classic of the year.

Singer Theo Hutchcraft and guitarist / keyboarder Adam Anderson follow the traditions of the British Synth Pop protagonists. It is obvious that the sound concepts of artists such as SOFT CELL, HEAVEN 17 or DEPECHE MODE were just as much inspiration as the distanced black and white aesthetics of JOY DIVISION or ULTRAVOX. Even the recently frowned upon saxophone solos, as known from bands like SPANDAU BALLET, are experiencing a renaissance with HURTS. And yet the two style icons are by no means retro and don’t just revive the style of the 80s with new means. Rather, they have created a new extravagance from England’s Pop history, which allows fashion, music and modernity to appear as a living synthesis of the arts.

This sense of style did not come about by chance. Hurts is the third collaborative project between Hutchcraft and Anderson. They took their first steps together under the band name BUREAU before founding the formation DAGGER in the middle of the decade. Back then, they collaborated with Pop grandmaster Richard X and toured with Synth Pop legend GARY NUMAN. However, they only reached their style-defining grandeur with HURTS (source CTS Eventim).
