Even if you are listening to Metal for quite some years it is entirely possible to miss a few good bands right and left, MARTYR from the Netherlands is one of those bands in my case. These guys do make kick-ass old-school Metal music since 1982, still it took until 2021 for them to appear on my radar (I blame it entirely on a blind spot the German Metal scene seems to have when it comes to press coverage of bands from the Netherlands). The first time I did a review about Utrecht’s finest was last year when I reviewed their 2019 outing ‘Live in Japan’. 2022 sees the release of their new full-length ‘Planet Metalhead’ and this one, once again, kicks ass! Songs like ‘Church Of Steel’ really do highlight what Rick Bouwman, Rick Valcon, Vinnie Wassink, Geofrey Maas and Robert van Haren are capable of. The drums are thundering, the bass is working as a kind of pillar for the overall compositions and the riffs are keeping the superstructures together while van Haren is soaring above it all. After 39 years these guys are still as old-school as it gets.
Conclusion: Even if there are no points for being original, this rips!
