French music gets a tough time, at least here in Britain, which is rather unfair given that France had produced a number of truly classic bands. Granted, not many, but STEREOLAB and METAL URBAIN more than compensate the rest. And then of course, there’s Serge Gainsbourg. The one thing the French do well is pop music – with a few quirks and kinks that render it distinct from the kind of pop that comes out of the rest of Europe, and indeed the world. It’s this pop vein that BRIGITTE mine, and with real aplomb. ‘Et Vous, Tu M’Aimes’ is an example of savvy, sassy pop that brings together a host of elements from classic 60s pop, doo-wop and soul. Clean, choppy guitars threaten to break into a jangle but don’t quite on opener ‘Battez-Vous’, which also boasts handclaps and piping female vocals that, rather than harmonise, all come together to create a melodious multi tonality - and are all delivered with a strong and sultry-sounding French accent that only adds to the appeal.
There’s a cabaret swing to ‘Big Bang’, and the hectic funk of ‘Oh La La’ has a distinctly disco vibe. Beautiful harmonies are a key factor in Brigitte’s sound, and this is nowhere more apparent on ‘La Vengeance D’une Louve’. In context of a decidedly upbeat and overtly pop album, on which most of the tracks sit around the three-minute mark, it’s hard to know exactly what to make of the last track, the seven-minute gospel funk number ‘Jesus Sex Symbol, which doesn’t seem to be ironic, humorous or even a part of the same album. I’ve nothing against stylistic experimentation or expansion, and the religious connotations aren’t entirely clear so can’t really consider that an issue... it just seems an odd way to end an otherwise cohesive and fun album.
