Album Review

So after the last FILTER offering was literally a crushing experience, the guys around Richard Patrick are back with a new collection of tracks on 'The Sun Comes Out Tonight' which is kicking off vibrantly with 'We Hate It When You Get What You Want', the band are giving away for free by submitting just an e-mail address. The track's full of brooding energy right from the start and explodes right in your face on the second chorus. The sophomore track 'What Do You Say' is of an equal nature, generating gravitational waves of galvanic heat. It's of the kind that makes you straight wanna head out into the night to rock out. All that is being stripped out on 'Surprise' to have a wall of ambient and acoustic sprinkles take their place, wrapping around Richard Patrick's clean vocals. It's a bit like 'Kill The Day' if you need a point of reference. Next up is the song to give the album its title and it's letting all its force come down on you and to use a star trek quote here “Resistance is futile” 'It's Got To Be Right Now' is heading the same direction, only that it is much more relentless altogether.

'This Finger's For You' is combining the ferocity of a hard rock song with the sense of melody that is inherit to a good pop song to a cohesive entity. 'First You Break It' on the other hand is the exact counterpart and strongly related to the earlier 'Surprise'. It i dips everything in a relaxing mood. Just take this as a moment of relief before 'Burn It' hits you and the hour of head-banging strikes. With 'Take That Knife Out Of My Back' begins the final chapter of the album that bears a distinct sonic signature. There is s stronger electronic feel about these. While that is still ripped apart by violent outbursts on the aforementioned track, this is all going to be fading with the last to ones. 'It's My Time' is a wonderful piano ballad and remains so for its entirety to put Richard Patrick's voice upfront as on 'It's Just You' where a simple beat and acoustic accentuation are being added. The album sure does hold one or the other surprise for the listener with classic FILTER moments included of course. A very strong release!
