INDIVIDUAL TOTEM have been away for quite a while, and while they never had a real international breakthrough their dormancy period didn't go by unnoticed and they have been sorely missed by a loyal fan base. At the beginning of August the trio returned with 'Kyria 13', which is based on a self-created sci-fi story, set in a different time and place. The story by now is up online on the band's website. Now let's head straight to the music, shall we?
The opening 'Croxxers' is going to embrace you with a set of warm analogue washes floating around and in-between the cracks the comparatively minimal pulses leave. The rest is covered by a varied vocal delivery ranging from sacral to scary. Followed by 'Lost Souls, this one is going straight back to a classic industrial/ EBM sound without adapting some of its simplicity, opting for a complex web of moods and rhythms that will leave a listener overwhelmed. 'The Great Mistake' on the other hand exhibits a different nature, revealing a rock undercurrent beneath its pulsing electronics while 'Council Of The Wise' for most of its time is an immersive ambient piece with little percussive support.
'Go To War' is being guided into your unconscious mind on the frail wings of a lead acoustic guitar with sprinkles of ambient and thus reveals another face of the project that has shown a great deal of versatility up until now on this album. Complicated break beats are the dominating element on the raging waves of 'Mindworms as the disjointed cries of a crippled mind aim to twist yours for good. The band concludes with 'Wintermute', an outcry o freedom and the forecast of a bright future. This is without a doubt an outstanding accomplishment for INDIVIDUAL TOTEM that will put them straight into the limelight of those looking for more than the average electronic adventure.
