To honour the memory of Twan Fleuren, LEGION OF THE DAMNED ex bass player who committed suicide last May, the band decided to re-release ‘Malevolent Rapture’, one of their best CD enriched with five additional tracks and a bonus DVD.
What is this “In Memory Of...” supposed to mean? The listening experience itself will not give you any clue, maybe it’s ambiguous so to let the listener substitute the bass player with anyone they had personally lost. Yet if this was made so on intent, it doesn’t come out very strongly and very well. Moreover, the lack of sincerity makes the band suspect of promotion on the back of their ex bass player. As far it concerns the music, the band is almost specialised in fast and furious metal, epic riffs, striking hooks, and bombastic drums. It has some of their most classic anthems such as the homonymous ‘Legion of The Damned’, ‘Malevolent Rapture’, and ‘Demonfist’. And the bonus tracks are moving towards the same direction adding some more anthems to their CV like ‘Mind Domination’ and ‘Work Of A Legend’.
Surely it is a great CD to have especially if you are unfamiliar with the work of the LEGION OF THE DAMNED one of the best contemporary Thrash Metal bands. And yet the rudeness and the capitalisation of “In Memory Of...” would make me uncomfortable to pursue this CD.
