Album Review

The KORDAN three emerged from the rave and indie rock scenes in Puerto Rico and made their way to United States, where they converged in Brooklyn and formed their band. CUT COPY after hearing their songs chose them to be their opening act on their North American tour leg in 2008, the following year they released demo recordings ‘Fantasy Nation’ which made a bit of a stir on the scene. This year they are bringing out ‘The Longing’, their first full length studio album.

KORDAN fuses Electro, New Wave and Shoegaze with a tinge of Post-punk, the result is wonderful and refreshing, they make each style all their own, define the fusion sound as unique and distinctive, all the more intensified by the thematic perception of the album which works superbly. Their music is at first impression misleadingly simple, yet as you enter deeply into it a whole new scope opens out. Dreamy sequences and songs, futuristic and dystopic - they create a believable world in the not so very but still distant future which works as a strong commentary on the present one as a rich and marvellous mixture of contrasts, contradictions of life and existence.

KORDAN builds up an intuitive recognition of atmosphere and emotions with their listeners, there is loneliness, alienation and the suffocating doldrum futility, an existential maze through which a memory of love and love itself are to be retraced and re-connect one to the lost sense of connection & one’s place in an estranged world. There is no sentimentality here to be found, just a fragile beauty and complexity of people looking for and longing for filling their life with the deeper meaning of love.

Although there are Electro-pop elements, there are also avant-garde influences present in KORDAN soundscapes. It’s upbeat and melancholy at the same time. It’s clear and yet obscured, none of the components overshadows another and yet each manages to stand out and tell the story and conveys the emotions and unifies with the others in perfect understanding of music, its essence, direction and vision. ‘The Longing’ is subtle and powerful, quietly epic, and also very moving. I recommend total exposure to this album, immerse yourself in this beautiful journey that KORDAN takes you on, you won’t regret it.
