Album Review

PSYCHE around the Canadian Darrin Huss is one of the veteran formations in the electronic pop music sector. They’ve somehow always been there in one way or another and now they’re once again back with a special treat for all the fans and perhaps those who want to become fans with a conservation of the first ever Live show in Mexico recorded and mixed in May 2008 directly from the venue’s sound board and so is this live recording already has more authenticity than many of the so called live recordings out there can claim for themselves. But even though this wasn’t mixed in the studio afterwards and hence can’t reach the sonic dimension of a record that has you just have to give the guy(s) of Noise Live kudos for delivering a quality job on the mixing. Everything is - as far as possible - clear and distinguishable and for the real live feeling you always hear the audience.

But now I’m going to quit talking about technical stuff and get straight to what you probably want to hear about most: The Music!!! It all starts out with an old male gospel that’s introducing the first song ‘The Beyond’ soon to hit off with rumbling dance beats and a powerful-voiced vocal performance of Darrin Huss and with the following ‘15 Minutes’ which breaks it down to a slower pace and gloomy soundscapes start to drift along the stage. ‘Unveiling The Secret’ doesn’t need any further breakdown and gets presented here in a new version. As I’m a big admirer of the works of JOY DIVISION I was pleased to hear Darrin’s version of the track ‘Disorder’ on the disc which is one of my all time favourites of the band packed in a modern costume but with the spirit of a past musical epoch and terrific vocals. With ‘The Brain Collapses’ were staying in past times and listen to the 80s-tinged and pumping sound of this track.

Finally also one of PSYCHE’S evergreens ‘Sanctuary’ - with a few lines sung in Spanish - is played making the crowd break out in euphoric reactions as their prayers were finally heard. Now it’s all about dancing. With a gorgeous and overwhelming showcase of the wonderful ‘Goodbye Horses’ and the pulse driving conclusion of ‘The Hiding Place’ and rave applause this recording ends and what’s there left to say? For fans a must-have. Others might complain about the bootleg character of the recording but is that really so bad?
