Album Review
The REVOLTING COCKS have been founded in 1985 by Al Jourgensen (MINISTRY), as well as the Belgians Luc van Acker, Patrick Codenys and Richard 23. The latter two left the band short time later over differences. The first album ‘Big Sexy Land’ was released in 1986, quickly followed by the live album ‘You Goddamn Son of a Bitch’ in 1987. The REVOLTING COCKS would release 3 more full-length albums before a release hiatus of over 13 years until the next album ‘Cocked and Loaded’ in 2006. This review’s topic ‘Sex-O Mixxx-O’ is the remix record of their most recent album ‘Sex-O Olympic-O’.
I’m in the position that I don’t know any of the original material, and by that I mean not only the original album but the entire catalogue, so even if I wanted to I couldn’t compare these songs with the others. The remix collection is started with ‘HookerBot3000 (Tweaker Mix)’ and presents as a minimalist electronic offering in a style that has a great deal of a 80s Synth Pop tune combined with an aggressive vocal style. The remix of ‘I’m Not Gay’ welcomes us with an experimental make-up of stuttering, distorted and noisy beats ultimately forming to a straight dance rhythm working well on dance floors. It has a little House feel to it and comes up with a couple of beautiful melodies. ‘Abundant Redundancy’ right from the start confronts you with high-level intricacy on the rhythmic front that will take you a while to unravel all its details, and the ultra-harsh industrial guitars give the whole thing a violent stance.
There’s light and dark on this collection. On the one hand you have really neat and interesting stuff that is going to keep up your interest for quite some time, and on the other hand there’s material you forget the moment it has faded and never miss it. Fans who have the original album already will most likely buy this just to complete their collection. For those new to the REVOLTING COCKS I think it’s better to start with an original album. I think I should do that as well.
