Album Review

STEVE MILLER is one of those “old fossils” who kick out a lot of music for a few years, and then strangely goes silent for some time so fans think he’s dead, and then almost ten years later out of nowhere puts out an album in the modern era. Now, just because this man was a huge hit back in the 70s doesn’t mean he can’t live up to the years 2010. If MEATLOAF could do it, so can MILLER. There is plenty of appreciation for good old rock and roll in the hard rock and metal world, and with a new offering since 1993, STEVE MILLER still knows how to remind everyone the roots of the more modern stuff these days.

‘BINGO!’ isn’t the most original album by STEVE MILLER; it features a lot of cover artists. But, it is so clean, crisp, and exciting that it puts a lot of modern stuff to shame. STEVE MILLER may be a fossil, but he still knows how to make great music. The album opens with ‘Hey Yeah’, the first single which is an energetic rock and roll track with plenty of fancy guitar work and great, modern vocals. Some might expect raw, static laden production from such an old band, but STEVE MILLER keeps his sound as pristine as ever. ‘Who’s Been Talkin’ is a great blues track, more dancy and catchy than the latest LADY GAGA hit. There’s a lot of bluesy tracks on this album mixed with a bit of jazz; certainly a BB. KING inspiration perhaps? ‘Rock Me Baby’ features a bit of piano and sexual innuendo in the perfect groove. Throw in some saxophone with the guitar and it is about as raunchy as a good DANZIG track.

‘Sweet Soul Vibe’ creates a slow ballad where STEVE MILLER croons away over some soft guitar and backing vocals that has the magic of ELTON JOHN mixed with RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. Finally, the notable ‘Ooh Pooh Pah Do’ may seem like a silly track, but it is so catchy and fun to listen to that no one can help but smile while listening to it. Now THAT’S STEVE MILLER for you! While this isn’t dark and evil music, and therefore fans may be wondering what the hell it is doing on the Reflections of Darkness website, ‘BINGO!’ is ripe with musical genius. Crawl back to the 70s and STEVE MILLER was about as shocking then as BRAIN DRILL may be shocking to people in the present. It’s really good to see a band so old that hasn’t lost any flavour or spirit in their music. This is certainly worth checking out for anyone who likes music. Period! Metal, rock, prog, jazz, fusion… it is all here.
