Album Review

THE RAIN WITHIN is the solo project from Andy Deane, singer/frontman from the American Goth/rock/alternative band BELLA MORTE. The name of the project is easily known to all fans of BELLA MORTE since it refers to the song ‘The Rain within Her Hands’.

When members of any band set out to do a solo album, you really don’t know what to expect, it can be brilliant as well as disappointing! Since I am a big fan of BELLA MORTE and love their moving and melancholic music I was pretty confident that I would like this. When I started listening to ‘Pain Management’ I quickly realized that I was going to need more time to gather my thoughts and feelings with these songs before I could try to put them into words. I often say that the more I listen to an album the more the songs grow, but here they did not only grow, the songs kind of unfolded in a way that I did not expect them to. When I thought that I grasped it all, one song or even one small but brilliant melody rose and made me rethink some things. I am impressed by the way Andy Deane easily plays with different kind of sounds and manages to make them all fit so well together. It all feels and sounds very creative and interesting. I enjoy hearing one moving melody followed by another and through all the songs I find myself listening intently to the music.

‘Long Way Home’ is the first single from the album and when I heard it for the first time, I felt that I could not wait to get my ears on the whole album. I am mesmerized by the melodies and really enjoy hearing the way Andy sings and uses his voice during it. The song has a cool beat and energy that together with strong lyrics add to the whole impression. ‘One World’ starts with darker, interesting and in a way edgier synth sound. It is cool to hear the song change as it speeds up with the in a way brighter sounding chorus. Then an amazing instrumental part follows with distant vocals that have me closing my eyes and simply loose myself in the beautiful music!

‘Into the Far’ is a different song that kind of kick-starts out of the one before with a heavier and more demanding beat. As I spent some time listening to this slow and intense song, I started to picture what the tune/sound that rises and falls all through the song reminds me of. It gives me the feeling of standing in the middle of an autumn field, surrounded by beautiful rising and falling mist. I love the lyrics, the way Andy sings and the darker atmosphere that kind of flows around me while I listen to this song. ‘Wait in Silence’ quickly became a favourite. I like the way it simply takes off from the start with an energy that only gets more present as the song continues. Strong and moving lyrics together with great melodies are something that I have come to expect of the songs on this album and this one is a feast for my ears and it also makes me want to bounce around to it.

‘Sky’ is an instrumental song that captured my interest from the first time I listened to it. I really like the way the song builds up before it reaches a calm middle part. Then the beat comes back with a vengeance and the song takes off to higher levels. It’s really impressive that Andy manages to transform this much feelings with instrumental music! I think this shows just how creative this man is!
