Once more, more than 25,000 visitors on every festival day turned the Hildesheim airfield into the centre of the Dark scene. The 20th edition of the M’era Luna brought on stage musical geniuses like ASP, VNV NATION, WITHIN TEMPTATION, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, and many more. Further, there was a broad supporting programme to enjoy every facet of the gothic culture. At the last of the again sold-out festival, the organizer announced the first artists for the M’era Luna 2020 - ticket sale starts on Monday, August 1, 2019 at 6 p.m.Friday evening, before the official programme started on main stage and hangar stage, the authors MARKUS HEITZ, CHRISTIAN VON ASTER and AXEL HILDEBRAND inspired the audience with their fascinating readings. On Saturday, ASP from Frankfurt provided a memorable final of the day. Their complex music told stories, and there was an energetic presence on stage, that captivated the audience. Also WITHIN TEMPTATION has proven once again, that their Symphonic Metal thrills the crowd at times lyrically, at times full of power. MONO INC. and OOMPH! were on a par with them at the main stage, and then DIE KRUPPS and AGONOIZE at the entered the Hangar with electronic sounds. The M’era Luna not only stands for the big names, but also for musical diversity: this year, the extremely promising newcomer NULL POSITIV opened the festival.
When the Future Pop icons VNV NATION entered the main stage on Sunday evening, it was clear to everyone, that the band from Ireland / Great Britain would provide a fulminant festival final: electronic rhythms, Pop, Techno-trance, and orchestral elements put a unique aesthetics to their music, and their energy exploded on stage as spectacular live show. Before their performance, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM have proven why they are a driving force of the international Gothic Rock and Gothic Metal scene: the black-dressed crowd celebrated the quintet for its brilliantly staged songs, which were bombastically performed on the main stage. The audience also loved the shows of SUBWAY TO SALLY, JOACHIM WITT, COMBICHRIST, SUICIDE COMMANDO, and DE/VISION, and they all represent the wide-ranging spectrum of the scene.
The entire gothic culture is known for its many-sidedness, and its aesthetics defines books, films, styling, or fashion. The wide range of fashion shows, an authentic medieval market, the dark Gothic Fashion Town, disco, workshops and the M’era Luna Academy met the needs of the diverse characteristics of the dark scene. Visitors walked along the biggest dark scene shopping mall in Europe, and the Academy made it possible to look behind the scene of the festival radio M’era Luna FM. After a long night on the dancefloor, the next day could be started with a medieval dance workshop. Also new was the festival design, and for the future, it will change from year to year and awaits the visitors with changing mystic characters that will take central stage. “Again we are pleased about a peaceful festival, that still felt like a family party despite the fact, that the audience becomes more and more internationally,” says Stephan Thanscheidt, CEO of the organizer FKP Scorpio, who set up an info point and a shuttle service at the Hannover airport for the first time. “That we could welcome 25,000 visitors at each of the two full festival days is a common thing for us, but the trust and lifeblood of this community is still not obvious.”
