SOULFLY were last seen live in Germany in summer 2018, now they are coming to Germany for five more concerts as part of the promotion of their album ‘Ritual’ (Nuclear Blast/Warner) which was released in October.

Even after two decades of their career SOULFLY continue to evoke almost cult zeal with every new album and every tour. In this sense, the eleventh studio album ‘Ritual’ (Nuclear Blast/Warner, released on 19 October 2018) lives up to its name - as a metallic ceremony of the highest order. The iconic quartet - Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar), Marc Rizzo (lead guitar), Zyon Cavalera (drums) and Mike Leon (bass) - again shines with hard riffs, thundering drums and fearsome growls. The title proves to be extremely accurate. “I’ve always felt that metal is very ritual-like,” Max affirms, “and I also like titles that consist of just one word,” he adds with a smile.

Their legacy so far includes not only the debut album ‘SOULFLY’ (1998), which won gold in the USA, but also classics such as ‘Primitive’, ‘3’, ‘Prophecy’, ‘Dark Ages’, ‘Conquer’, ‘Omen’, ‘Enslaved’, ‘Savages’ and, most recently, ‘Archangel’. They have also staged some of Metal’s greatest collaborations: from Chino Moreno (Deftones) and Corey Taylor (Slipknot) to Tom Araya (Slayer) and Todd Jones (Nails). But ‘Ritual’ is an important milestone in the history of the band: It is not only their twentieth anniversary, but also their third album with Max’ son on drums. A career that seamlessly continues the success of Cavalera’s previous band SEPULTURA:

The self-titled debut ‘Soulfly’ (1998) sells more than half a million copies in the United States alone, seamlessly follows the instrumentation of SEPULTURA’s ‘Roots’ and expands it with esoteric spheres and numerous guest appearances. In the course of the nine albums and endless tours that followed, Cavalera collaborated with the Who’s Who of the heavy rock scene, including, as already mentioned, musicians from SLIPKNOT, SLAYER, MEGADETH, DEFTONES, RADIOHEAD, STONE SOUR, CYPRESS HILL, MACHINE HEAD, DEVILDRIVER, FEAR FACTORY, MORBID ANGEL, S.O.D., SKINDRED, BORKNAGAR, WILL HAVEN and CATTLE DECAPITATION, who all accompany him as either band members, guest musicians or tour members.

Cavalera’s son Zyon has been playing drums with SOULFLY since 2012, the family business (manager is Max’ wife Gloria) will be completed in 2015/2016 by guitarist Marc Rizzo and new bassist Mike Leon (ex-HAVOC). The recordings for SOULFLY’s current album are with producer Josh Wilbur (LAMB OF GOD, GOJIRA, HATEBREED, TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS), ‘Ritual’, the sequel to the 2015 top 20 album ‘Archangel’, will be released in October 2018, and Cavalera: “If you listen to this, I hope you can feel the true meaning of SOULFLY and what it means to our ‘tribe’.” The fans of SOULFLY have no limitations like the fans of many other metal genres and they can enjoy a variety of different styles and spiritual themes. I am very proud of SOULFLY after twenty years in the metal world. Having Zyon on drums is a great feeling. I pass it on to him. Our tribe is stronger than ever!
