8th November 2014
DAF & Fehlfarben
The last time both legends of the Ratinger Hof era met, was at their concert in 1981 in the Philipshalle (now Mitsubishi Electric hall) in Düsseldorf. Under the motto “Verschwende Deine Jugend 201”‘ (Waste your youth 2014), these two bands, who invented a new musical genre in those days, will perform together on the same stage of the Zakk again.
The successful documentary novel ‘Verschwende Deine Jugend’, released in 2002, resulted in a revival of the NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle = New German Wave) and thus the interest in the German language music of the Punk and Wave era grew. Decades after the eighties it is quite clear that these two bands were the most influential of this genre and furthermore they still inspire musicians and bands nowadays.
In 1978 the German band DAF (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft = German American Friendship) was founded as a five piece project but after their tour in the UK in 1981 DAF was reduced to Robert Goerl and Gabi Delgado-López. After changing the image and concept they became commercially successful. Acclaimed to be pioneers and an inspiration for the genre Electro Punk, EBM and Techno, the years 1980 – 1982 were the peak level with their albums ‘Die Kleinen und die Bösen’ (The petite and the evil) and ‘Alles ist gut’ (Everything is good). For the latter album they received the German Record Award. DAF was the first band to use the Korg, ARP and Oberheim System Synthesizers contrary to the manual in order to create tweeting bass lines and became a role model for the following Acid- house movement. With their martial appearance due to their hairdo and provocative lyrics, ‘Der Mussolini’ - Tanz den Mussolini (Dance the Mussolini) and ‘Der Räuber und der Prinz’ (The robber and the prince) to name just a few, they were controversially discussed and being suspected to have a fascistic tendency. Using these discussions as a kind of promotion they never really took a firm stand. Between the years 1986 and 2007 they had some separations and reunions until they decided in 2008 to work together again on occasion of their 30th band anniversary. In the last years they had some successful concerts and appearances at festivals.
Successor of the band MITTAGSPAUSE (lunch break), the band was founded 1979 in London during a concert of THE TEARDROP EXPLODES. Being quite experimental in their former Punk bands, the members now decided to work together more professionally. Their effort yielded a contract at EMI which was for the band surely a good thing at first but on the other hand they were heavily criticised for having backstabbed the Punk movement. ‘Monarchie & Alltag’ (Monarchy and everyday life) was the debut album released in 1980 and became their most successful album which has, even today, a high significance in the German language Rock scene. Shortly after the release of the debut album the singer Peter Hein left the band. FEHLFARBEN (Missing colours) disbanded in 1984 but reunited in 1989 again. All together they launched 10 albums (the last one in 2012, including a tour in Germany and Austria), 2 live albums and a compilation album. Being personally close to DAF, both bands released the song ‘Kebab- Träume’.
