Andrew Stockdale, who was working as a fashion photographer in Sydney when the album was released in 2006, founded the band with bassist Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett in 2000. After having some jam sessions in their own studio, they earned a little money and some free drinks by playing in abandoned factory buildings and small pubs. Shortly after that they recorded their first demo cd, called ‘Velvet Sound Demo’. Parts of it are now to be found on the upcoming re-release.Asked about the recording, Stockdale says: “We just banged out that whole record in one day. And you can hear it’s pretty close to where the record actually ended up. I can't believe we were that good and we hadn't toured, we hadn't made any records before, we had no experience. It’s like, ‘What the hell was going on?’”
The album later was recorded at Sound City Studio (drums), at Pass Studio Burbank (bass, guitars and vocals) and at Sound Factory. It gained numerous awards, including the Australian Grammy for best hard rock performance.
Looking back, Stockdale sees the album as kind of a promoter for guitar based music: “After we had some success, it felt like labels were more open minded to guitar driven bands, phase pedals and general psychedelic lyrical content, so to speak,” says Stockdale. “Looking back now, I do see our first record as a catalyst for a bit of a change in the musical landscape. Whatever WOLFMOTHER’s roll or impact was on this change is questionable. I’m just happy that we got in when we did and everything I've seen since seems pretty righteous.”
In addition to the original tracklist, live versions and remixes of the tracks, as well as B-sides can be found on the double cd and double vinyl version of the re-release, out on September 25th, 2015.
