suede autofiction
SUEDE are back with the announcement of their ninth studio album, ‘Autofiction’, to be released on September 16th, 2022 via BMG. The band from London just presented the brand new single ‘She Still Leads Me On’ live for the first time as part of their headlining show at Brussels’ Cirque Royal and is now available to stream everywhere.

When SUEDE began work on the new songs that will make up the forthcoming full-length ‘Autofiction’, their primary concern was a return to their roots. They wanted to focus on the essentials again. Brett Anderson, Mat Osman, Simon Gilbert, Richard Oakes and Neil Codling met outside a rehearsal space in deserted Kings Cross. They organized the key, brought in their own equipment, set everything up and got started. A bit like in the early days. “‘Autofiction’ is our punk album,” says Brett Anderson of the upcoming studio album. “Completely no frills. Just the five of us in the same room; all glitches, all damn quirks and bugs are heard. The whole band completely exposed in all their original state of chaos.”

‘Autofiction’ was recorded live at Konk Studios in North London with SUEDE as long-time collaborator in established producer Ed Buller. Ed previously produced debut single ‘The Drowners’, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this month.

While ‘The Drowners’ was a rattling hymn about blurring gender roles and the unique energy of oddly lived teenage years three decades ago, ‘Autofiction’, recorded at an entirely different point in the band members’ lives, centres on correspondingly different themes - but sounds suede no less alive. “‘Autofiction’ sounds fresh and natural because it captures where we stand and want to stand,” says Brett Anderson. This point is in many ways the same as it was 30 years ago when it all started: They are still a group of people who, above all, live the feeling of being in a room together and unpacking the instruments. “When we were in the rehearsal room writing this album, it was like a rush, an absolutely physical feeling. Something you cling to like your life depends on it,” says bassist Mat Osman.

The first single ‘She Still Leads Me On’ ended up being the song that gave the album its direction. A great song that Brett dedicated to his late mother. The album title also suggests that ‘Autofiction’ is one of the most personal works Anderson has ever recorded. Writing the autobiographical books ‘Coal Black Mornings’ and ‘Afternoons With The Blinds Drawn’ had fundamentally changed his self-image as a performer and singer in the limelight, and this new perspective is now reflected in the lyrics of the forthcoming album.

While they primarily wanted to deliver something that sounded very different from their predecessor ‘The Blue Hour’ - the album that gave them a Top 5 position in the UK charts in 2018 and Top 40 here - SUEDE make a break aimed at, which is as crass as in the nineties between ‘Dog Man Star’ and ‘Coming Up’, the British are now heralding the next phase and the fourth decade. After two acclaimed documentaries (Mike Christie’s ‘The Insatiable Ones’ for Sky Arts and ‘Rock Family Trees’ for BBC Four) and just in time for the 30th anniversary of their debut single ‘The Drowners’, this new chapter began last night in Brussels - with the Premiere of the new single ‘She Still Leads Me On’.
