Single Review

The third single taken from DEPECHE MODE’s ‘Delta Machine’, ‘Should Be Higher’, has been one of the fan favourites since day one and probably one of the highest moment of the current tour. It follows the logic that it’s been chosen as a single release. As we publish this review, we haven't received any of the remixes. The promo CD contains the album version, the instrumental and an interesting Radio Edit. I don't really know if this is going to be released in the end as the tracklist published recently does not mention those versions... Another strange thing in DM's galaxy?

The Radio Edit is a bit groovier with additional drum-programming and new synth pad here and there. Not revolutionary, but a nice edit treatment. Too bad it has been reduced to 3”29 but... it's for radio isn't it? For those who haven't heard this song yet, it's by far one of the most beautiful vocal performances of Dave Gahan, reaching up for very high notes. A lot consider it should have been a far much better choice as the first single instead of ‘Heaven’... but we ain't going to re-do the story, aren't we?

As per remixes, the only one that has been revealed so far is the Jim Jones Revue and it inspires some very mixed feelings amongst the fans. I'll put on their credits that they tried an original, to say the least, approach: guitars, live drums, strange piano break, and real bass. At first listening I just wondered if there was not a bug on my sound cloud with two songs playing at the same time! Although I’m now getting more familiar to it, I still can't really appreciate it, especially toward the end with this out of tone guitar kind of solo. Not my cup of tea, but at least, it changes from the Dance Club or weird minimal electro usually given to Depeche Mode remixes.

A bit of moaning at the end... why no B-Sides anymore?
