VÖ: 06th July 2007

Introduction

BIG BOY was probably born around the year 1977 in Sweden but due to some unexplainable events in this twisted world he spent most of his childhood in Germany. Since BIG BOY matured fast, it didn’t take him long to get into some serious trouble. After these traumatic years in the mud BIG BOY began a new journey in the search for comradeship and his meaning in life. This was certainly made clear to him after a short vacancy at a mental institution (just to "visit a friend") where, like he says, Freddie Mercury appeared to him in one of his lively dreams.

He told him to start the most kick ass, twisted Rock N Roll Band the world has ever seen. BIG BOY, not really knowing whether that prophecy was for real or just a fragment of his imagination, decided to trust Freddie. BIG BOY had finally found his destiny and now tried to inspire everyone in or around him to join his path. On his following pilgrimage along the Santiago Road he met three senses seeking, Absolute Vodka drinking, lip gloss eating musicians, who were also looking for that ecstasy called Rock N Roll and shared his affinity for Swedish ass along the way. Nice! This was everything BIG BOY had ever dreamed off.

“Being the biggest German speaking entertainer since Marlene Dietrich and the greatest fake since Milli Vanilli is a bit overwhelming at times.”

Song Review

01. La Légion - 1:34
This French song starts with trumpets playing, so it almost sounds like when BIG BOY would be expected and they would like to greet him with that sound. Then, he starts talking and by the time, this intro starts coming out, his voice gets louder constantly and he almost screams at the end of the song. It’s full of power although he doesn’t sing at all.

02. Hail the Big Boy - 3:31
Starting with a marching sound, soon the drums start and his voice comes up. It kind of reminds me of the voice of MARYLIN MANSON. The song has a nice sound to it and the chorus really gets into your ears. This song is homage to him self. Later in the song, the sound and his voice alternate - this gives a really nice contrast.

03. Get over it - 3:10
This song starts slowly too and after a while, a sound like clapping starts out and his voice comes up. The guitars are pretty dominating at the beginning. And this song also gets easily into your ear and you just have to sing along. All in all, it’s probably one of the best songs on the album because it’s something everybody can remember easily and the sound is really great!

04. One good reason - 3:57
The guitars at the beginning are nice. His low and pretty rough voice matches perfectly to this pretty hard sound. And like always, this song is easily to remember. It reminds me of OOMPH! somehow. And since I’m a fan of them, I also like this song. The chorus is a little slower than the rest of the song which is a nice contrast to the rest of the song.

05. Let the good bury their own dead - 5:38
This pretty long song starts with the sound of breathing which gives you the impression that something mysterious is coming up. Then, the piano starts which is really surprising. The breathing still continues. This is probably the slowest song of the album. His voice comes up really quietly and he keeps it down like that. It’s almost like he is whispering to us, like he is telling a secret. The song ends up into a beautiful piano solo. I just love it!

06. Gestasi baby - 3:28
A door opens, you can hear a whip - the song starts. The guitars are getting louder and his voice is as great as before. There are some really high notes in this song which gives it a whole new impression. Also, the German accents in this song are great. It’s a nice contrast to all the English lyrics. This is a great song!

07. Catastrophe - 3:46
It starts out like a play kids do. Then, the guitars start playing and the real song gets revealed by that. Later on, the guitars and drums really dominate this song and BIG BOY’s voice fits perfectly to it. In the end, you have several guitar solos which are awesome because it just perfects the song. It’s called “Catastrophe” but the song is definitely not one of them!

08. Fake it - 3:26
Somebody shoots, drums are starting and guitars come up. BIG BOY enters the stage and the song starts. “Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll”, that’s what the song is about. He makes fun of all the fake-rockers in our music scene. Besides the great sound with the really heavy drums and guitars the lyrics are just awesome because he is bringing this whole discussion about rock stars to a really good point. Fake it ‘til you make it!”

09. Sin=sational - 4:09
There is a guitar solo at the beginning of this song which is really great. The sound rises and slows down as soon as BIG BOY’s voice comes up. For the fast chorus, the sound comes back and really gives a great impression. Then, the same happens again. All in all, this song is a nice contrast of sound and voice.

10. Just like we (choose to be) - 3:47
Pretty electronic song comes up and his voice just sets accents in the beginning of the song. The song opens up and the guitars get heavier and heavier. His voice gets rougher and so, the song sounds pretty raw.

11. Give up - 4:10
This last song of the album starts with an acoustic guitar and him whispering. Some words you can hardly understand because his voice is that thin. I guess, the next instrument coming up is a cello and then, violins open up the sound into a wonderful new world full of surprises and dreams. It really sets the door into another world. Although this song is called “Give up”, I don’t think he wants you to give up with this song because it sounds more like a new hope which sets a really nice ending to this album.

Conclusion

Now that I’ve heard the new BIG BOY album “Hail the Big Boy”, I think it’s really pity that I missed him at this year’s WGT. He shows a lot of different sites of himself which really gives you the impression he is talking to you, and just to you. I’m sure; I’m going to see him at his upcoming tour in October!
