Album Review

ANHEDONIA was founded in the summer 2004 as the one man project of Vojtech Smetana from Prague. He already worked on music before, but then he decided that it was finally time to show his music to the world and started to work on the first album, which saw its release in 2006 by the small Slovakian label Aliens Production.

That album is called ‘Destructive Forces’ and I can’t get rid of the thought he had this term in mind the whole time, while he was producing the album, as all the rhythms and beats that are presented, in one or the other form, are distorted and give the album a truly destructive feeling. Contrary to that are the often very spherical arranged synth layers woven over the uneven grounds full of complex rhythmic arrays. But the album has a weakness and that is already the first and title-giving track of the album, which is following after the short intro track. It appears pretty monotonous to me with not much variation or dynamic. Luckily the rest of the album doesn’t take the same direction and so the following track ‘Malfunction’ makes it up again and displays an even darker and intense face of ANHEDONIA. Dark ambient soundscapes unfold over slow, intriguing patterns of rhythmic brutality, paired with the sub-cooled charm of industrial elements.

‘Nuclear Paranoia’ aptly uses samples and combines it with the subtle, disturbing effect of haunting dozes of concentrated ambience, putting the listener in a slight state of unease with an underlying current of a menace; a brilliant track in my opinion. The track ‘Bad Sector’ initially works with only a sparse rhythmical accentuation, the beat only comes in intervals, embedded into varying sequences, partly manipulated with bit-crushing effects. Also very nice here are the heavenly choirs, giving the whole thing something soothing, despite the harshness and complexity it possesses

Another quality release of Aliens production apart from the weak intro and the quite likeable first track, it’s a great album, cohesively blending the elements of noise and melody to a unique and diverse sound.
