Album Review

After Oliver Jung (vocals) left the band, former MEGAHERZ member Matze 'Jablonski' Elsholz took his place. After almost 3 years of working, they’ve released their new CD ‘Still’ just a few weeks ago.

The name ‘Still’ (Silent), as some might already assume, is exactly the opposite of the album's sound. Compositions like ‘Kadavergehorsam’, or the musical interpretation of Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann's children’s-story ‘Der Daumenlutscher’, remind me of the band LOCO with Matze's vocals and the instrumental strength and brutality. A song like ‘Alles in einen Topf’ sounds like some classic stuff, whilst ‘Herzlos’ sounds like the new RAMMSTEIN output. The riffing, the lyrics and the employment of electronics almost appear like a tribute to the biggest German industrial metal musicians. Persiflage, rather than a tribute is the ‘Marmor, Stein und Eisen bricht’ version, entitled ‘Dam, Dam’. Even though it’s basically sounding like J.B.O., the track is still kind of funny and easy to listen to.

Also, the short orchestral parts of the song remind of DIMMU BORGIR, even though they’re less epic. The title song ‘Still’ shows that DIE! has more in common with the aforementioned than you’d notice at first. All of the other 14 songs clearly show the MEGAHERZ influences, Matze has brought into the band. All in all, you could come to think that DIE! try to create a stylistic cross-section of Germany's dark-metal bands. But you have to say that all the interpretations are being played really well and show the band’s skills. Also, singer Matze stands out and scores with his long-time experience. Due to that, the last track ‘Teufelskreis’, performed as monologue; is a real highlight on ‘Still’. Really, really interesting stuff! The included video to ‘Jeder mit jedem’ is a nice gimmick for all fans and those who want to become fans.

‘Still’ is a good album, no doubt about that. It’s clearly audible by whom they’ve been influenced, but the band evolved and became more powerful and murderous than they were in times of ‘Manche bluten ewig’. This also means that they’ve changed their entire style. But I guess this is just the way they want to do it after Oliver Jung has left the band.
